The catalytic oxidation of ethylene to carbon dioxide in excess air has been studied atsteady state. The catalyst temperature was measured for various feed temperature and concentration. The bifurcation diagrams Which describe the dependence of the catalyst temperature on the feed gastemperature were obtained for different ethylene concentrations in the feed gas.The ignition and ex-tinction temperatures were found out and the unique and multiple steady state regions could bedetermined from these diagrams. The experimental results can be satisfactorily explained by thecatastrophe theory and singularity theory.According to the steady state multiplicity features an at-tempt to discriminate the competitive kinetic models was made for the reaction.

A refined double integral method has been applied to the problem encountered in the diffu-sion release of a drug from a polymeric matrix. The finite external mass transfer resistance has alsobeen incorporated into the present analysis.Experimental release rates of 5-fluorouracil fromethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer into distilled water were measured in order to test the applicabilityof these models. All system parameters were measured by experiments and models were built up.Themodels presented here are much more accurate than Higuchi model and much easier than the exactsolutions. In view of accuracy, the models are almost the same as the exact solutions. The experi-mental release data agree Well with the computed results

Merits of the Fernandes model(Fernandes et al.1983)for two-phase slug flow in verticaltubes are reviewed in this paper. While predicting many macroscopic parameters of slug flow in verti-cal tubes,it fails to present correctly the trend that the average voidage in liquid slugs increases asthe rising velocity of Taylor bubbles is increased. It is also desirable to extend its application toelectrolyte systems, and to churn flow conditions.Based on the diagnostic analysis, the model equa-tion for gas entrainment by falling liquid film is reformulated and the influence of surface tension isalso accounted for.Development of the falling liquid film is recognized in the revised model in or-der to suit the case of short Taylor bubbles as well. The modified model predicts the variation of av-erage voidage in liquid slugs in good agreement with available experimental data.

By combining results of transient response tests with forced concentration oscillation experi-ments,behaviors of benzene oxidation over V_2O_5 catalysts has been determined.Product increse canbe observed during periodic operation. The mechanism of catalytic reaction can be elucidated andthe behavior of concentration oscillation during the reaction is determined. The relation betweencycling frequency and response characteristics has also been studied with two different types of peri-odic operation,i.e.,regular and irregular square waves.

The macroprocess of particle formation from suspension droplets of styrene in a pdymerizationsystem was investigated.Inorganic hydroxyapatite or its mixture with polyvinyl alcohol as thepolymerization system was used. Those items such as the effects of the Weight fraction of dispersed-phase,the amount of the inorganic stabilizer and the agitation speed on the breakup and coalescence of thetransient dispersed drops etc. Were examined. Results showd that the dynamic behavior of the transi-ent polymer droplets changed in the presence of the suspension stabilizer during the reaction.

Vapor-liquid equilibrium composition and temperature were measured for binary andternary mixtures of benzene, toluene and p-xylene at 101.33 kPa The equilibrium cell of Boubliketal.was modified for the present study. The experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data were corre-lated with the Wilson equation.
