A theoretical analysis of the effects of flow and mixing on the operating features of a
stirred column reactor(SCR) with multistage mixers and cooling partition plates was
conducted. A method for calculating the concentration reduction for a second order chemical
reaction in a SCR was proposed. The reactants concerned were pre-mixed before feeding into
the SCR. The SCR was composed of a number of stages with interstage backmixing.
Experimental investigation with various reaction media were carried out in order to study
the effect of mixing on the operational performance of the SCR. The experimental data were
compared with the theoretical results.

A new excess Gibbs free energy/equation of state type mixing 0rule was derived by removing the infinite pressure boundary
condition imposed by Wong and Sandler. The mixing rule was extensively tested in terms of a comprehensive data base,
consisting of 52 simple nonpolar-nonpolar, carbon dioxide containing, hydrocarbon-hydrocarbon, CFC, polar-polar, nonpolar-
polar binary and multicomponent systems. Focused on the complete predictive capability, a comparison between the Wong-Sandler
and the mixing rule proposed was conducted. The results indicate that the new mixing rule is in general superior to the Wong
-Sandler’s, and the binary interaction parameter as required by the latter is removed, which reduces computing effort and is
reliable in predictions of vapor-liquid equilibria from low pressures to high pressures.

The aim of this work is to apply cubic equations of state (EOS) to vapor-liquid equilibria calculations of gas-
heavy hydrocarbon systems, which are asymmetric in molecular size and are usually found in natural gases. Investigation has
been done to test the validity of the original PSRK and the cubic simplified perturbed hard-chain (CSPHC) models for global
phase diagrams. The calculation results show that both equations overpredict vapor pressure in the near critical region. In
the prediction of the solubilities of high molecular weight (MW) hydrocarbons in the natural gas, the PSRK model gives good
agreement for the dew point pressure-vapor composition diagrams. Adjustment of the pure component parameters of the CSPHC EOS
for heavy components to fit the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data has been proved to give significant promoting in
prediction accuracy. However, further improvement of a van der Waals EOS, such as SRK, PT and DG models for the asymmetric
systems by adjusting the three pure component properties, Tc, pc and ω, did not achieve satisfactory results for heavy
components.

The pore size distribution (PSD) measured by the gas bubble point (GBP) method of ceramic microfiltration (MF) membranes
prepared by suspension technique was found to be significantly influenced by the membrane thickness. A culm-like model for
pore structure was introduced to characterize the membrane pores instead of the conventional model which does not reflect the
radius variation along the pore passages and is unable to explain the thickness effect on the membrane PSD. A laminate
structure, taking the culm-like model for pore structure into consideration, was hypothesized for ceramic MF membranes. A
mathematical model was then established to quantitatively describe the relationship between the membrane number PSD and the
membrane thickness. Good results were obtained for the correlation of mean pore size and simulation of the PSD for ceramic MF
membranes.

Based on single drop mass transfer models and two phase flow equation, a general equation for calculating the ’true’ height
of transfer unit of extraction columns was derived and tested with four types of extraction columns with some different

The solubility of styrene from polystyrene in supercritical carbon dioxide is measured at 323 K, 333 K, and 343 K in the
pressure range from 12 to 28 MPa. Based on the association concept and the theory of dense gas sorption in polymers, a
displacement and association mechanism on supercritical fluid extraction of the monomer from the polymer is proposed. And, a
novel mathematical model for correlating the solubility data obtained from the experiments is also proposed in the paper.

Hindered diffusion of proteins in a porous packing plays an important role in protein chromatographic purification. The HETP
method was adopted to analyze the influence of axial dispersion, film mass transfer and hindered diffusion in the porous
packing employing a size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) process. The retention behavior with eight proteins of different
relative molecular mass was experimentally detected with a commercial SEC column. A correlation based on the relative
molecular mass of the proteins and the packing porosity was developed and used to predict the effective diffusion coefficient
of a protein in the porous packing. The predicted values of effective diffusion coefficient were very consistent with the
experimental results with the average error of 8.6%.
